KEEP ON SCROLLING DOWN TO FIND OUT HOW - THERE IS SO MUCH INFORMATION AND ACTIVITIES FOR YOU TO EXPLORE.

E-safety is an integral part of children’s education in today’s digital world and is embedded in their learning at school. We also want to help our parents and children improve their own understanding of e-safety issues, so they can learn to use the internet and all digital media in a safe and secure way. If you haven't received this months e-safety newsletter, please contact our school office:  office@richmond.leics.sch.uk

At Home

 As a parent you'll know how important the internet is to children - they use it to learn, play, socialise and express themselves. It's a highly creative place of amazing opportunities. But the technology children use every day can seem a bit daunting and you might worry about the risks your child can face online - such as bullying, contact from strangers or the possibility of them seeing illegal or inappropriate content.

There is a wealth of information attached below, including our monthly e-safety newsletter (these should be sent to you each month) and a variety of recommended websites to support you with issues around e-safety. You can also engage with your children regarding their use of the internet while at home. Here are some conversation starter ideas from www.childnet.com

  • Ask your children to tell you about the sites they like to visit and what they enjoy doing online.
  • Ask them about how they stay safe online. What tips do they have for you, and where did they learn them? What is OK and not OK to share?
  • Ask them if they know where to go for help, where to find the safety advice, privacy settings and how to report or block on the services they use.
  • Encourage them to help. Perhaps they can show you how to do something better online or they might have a friend who would benefit from their help and support.
  • Think about how you use the internet as a family. What could you do to get more out of the internet together and further enjoy your lives online.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school.

At School

Richmond Primary School has a great team of Digital Leaders who promote e-safety, scroll down below.

As part of your child’s curriculum and the development of ICT skills, we provide access to the internet only in teacher supervised lessons.

We strongly believe that the use of the web and email is hugely worthwhile and an essential tool for children as they grow up in the modern world. But because there are always concerns about children having access to undesirable materials, we have taken positive steps to deal with this risk in school. Our school internet access provider operates a filtering system that restricts access to inappropriate materials. This is monitored by our ICT Technician.

As part of the curriculum, each class discusses how we can all stay safe online and the dangers we may face on the internet. Every child on entry to our school is asked to sign an Acceptable Use Agreement so that we know they have read and understood our school's rules on staying safe.

our team of dedicated Digital Leaders will be working hard to deliver assemblies to their peers.

Internet Safety Day: 6th February 2024

This year our Digital Leaders are in full swing preparing for Safer Internet Day.  They have already planned to do assemblies in both the year 2/3 building and run an assembly for children in the 4,5 and 6 building.  Children in Early Years and Year 1 will also have an assembly.

I am delighted to say we have yet again signed up to the Safer Internet Centre to use their excellent resources to promote e-safety and teach our children how to stay safe and have been awarded a certificate for how we plan to celebrate Safer Internet Week.

WINNER OF THE E-SAFETY COMPETITION;

Year 4 Digital Leaders were delighted with the e-safety entry from Ella M in year 3 CW, who made an amazing PowerPoint on tips to stay safe online. Click on the picture below to see her presentation.

Internet Safety Day: 7th February 2023.

Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online.

Internet Safety Day/week is a perfect opportunity to discuss/revisit our e-safety policy and guidance/rules on how to keep safe electronically. E-safety is taught continually at school, as it is so important to protect our children from harmful content. We have been awarded a Certificate of support from SaferInternetday.org.uk for promoting e-safety (see below).

During E-safety week children in lower key stage 1 will be discussing stories and videos about how to stay safe and protect themselves on line.  In Year 3 ,they will learn how to create a secure password, and check its strength. Year 4 children will be exploring the 'Play like and Share scenarios' by 'ThinkUKnow'. They will produce a little booklet to take home, with little tips and reminders on how to protect themselves online.  Children in Years 5 and 6 will be analysing the content of the terms and conditions of many Apps, which they have signed up to.  Other possible activities may include: creating Chatterboxes, playing Safety Snakes with BeeBots, making 'Data Gift' memory joggers and participating in e-safety quizzes.

If children do not feel comfortable asking a question relating to e-safety, there is an E-safety question box, in the computing area, for them to 'post' any worries or questions in anonymously. These will be addressed in their next lesson.

Our dedicated team of Digital Leaders will be running an E-safety competition for children in years 4-6.  WATCH THIS SPACE.

Whilst the Internet can be an amazing resource, it's important that children have good experiences online, and know where to get support should something go wrong. Do you know which Online Games your children are playing?  How long they are on them for?  The potential dangers? A recent study has shown most children spend between 3-5 hours a day gaming. I have placed a number of activities and videos for your child/ren on each year computing page and there are lots more too, just scroll down.  In order to access these activities, please click the link on your child’s school jotter page and it will take your directly to their computing page.  Alternatively, click on the Curriculum Tab (next to Home), select Curriculum, then Curriculum Link, click on Computing and then select your child’s year group.

Parent Zone Episode four of Remote Schooling SOS covering internet safety and safety tech at home. Does it work? Why is it so hard to set up? What’s worth trying? Just click on the blue link above.  They have also done a PODCAST exploring the question: Should parents stop worrying about the time children spend gaming?  Just click here to watch it.

Parent Zone’s Internet section helps children (aged 8-11) make sense of their online experiences, and encourages them to talk to their parents should they feel worried or confused about something. Click here for some of their fun activities.

Richmond Primary School are committed to working with pupils, parents, governors and the whole school community to safeguard children in the digital world. Children learn about E-Safety in lessons, assemblies, through the Digital Leaders’ Termly Newsletter and special days throughout the year. The children are taught how to protect themselves and stay safe online. We also have a member from the 'Prevent Team,' (Leicestershire Constabulary), who comes in each year to discuss how children can stay safe online. We hope the information we supply, together with the links to other recommended sites, will help you understand more about e-safety.

ON-LINE GAMING - information provided by CEOP:

Online gaming can offer many positive experiences. It can give children and young people the chance to escape into a virtual world, to learn, and to connect with others.  However, there is a risk of children and young people viewing inappropriate content in games and being contacted by adults seeking to exploit them. This week's activity pack for parents and carers to deliver to their children explores how they can stay safe while gaming:

Gaming : a video guide for parents and carers
CEOP' s new video guide and accompanying article, developed in collaboration with The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (Ukie), helps parents and carers to understand:
  • How in-game chat works;
  • How it might be abused by others, and;
  • What they can do to help keep their children safe whilst using in-game chat

New from Parent Info: active gaming and Roblox guide
Gaming can be an active experience for children and young people. A new Parent Info article explores how active gaming works and the games available that help them stay active.

Advice on Roblox for Parents and carers: Parent Info's guide , this takes a look at how the platform is used and how it can be made safer for children.

You can keep up to date with the latest news from the CEOP Education team by following them on Facebook and Twitter. If you have any questions or feedback about their resources, get in touch with them at ceopeducation@nca.gov.uk.

Our 2018 Digital Leaders have just put together 5 Rules for Safe Computing at Richmond School, see below:

URGENT MESSAGE TO PARENTS RE: APPS

Please remember a few “laws” of internet safety:

  • There’s no such thing as privacy in any app.
  • Any app that allows people to upload content is always going to have a very dark side.
  • Any app that is difficult to monitor will have greater risk of abuse. Musical.ly, has an age restriction of 13+, like Instagram and Facebook. This is for your child's safety.
  • Find out more about these apps:https://protectyoungeyes.com/apps/ this site allows you to click on any of these apps to find out how safe your child is.
