Year 4 2022/23
Our learning theme for Summer One is: Misty Mountain Sierra
In our Connected Curriculum, we will be gathering knowledge linked to the Big Question:
Why are mountains important to our world?
Community Project: Geography students from Redmoor Academy are coming to visit our Year 4 pupils to do some map reading, use of four figure grid references, OS maps and directional language.
Welcome to Year 4!
In Year 4 we have 3 classes: Mrs Taylor (4RT), Mrs Orton (4HO) and Miss Warnes (4NW).
Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure children come dressed in the Richmond PE uniform (white t shirt or polo, joggers or shorts, Richmond jumper or cardigan and trainers). Children who are going swimming will need to bring their kit in on a Wednesday.
Homework will be due every other Monday. The dates will be on the bottom of the homework sheet.
Spelling tests will take place every Monday. Children will need to bring to school their red spelling book so they can stick the new spellings in to bring home.
It is helpful if Reading Records and reading books are in children’s bags each day.
Please make sure Reading Records come into school to be checked on a Friday and children have read at least 3 times a week.
If you have any questions then please email year4@richmond.leics.sch.uk
Emails are checked regularly but if you have an urgent message or question then please contact the office.
Year 4 Curriculum Overview
02.03.23 World Book Day.
4RT loved dressing up as their favourite characters and sharing a book with a child from year 2/3. They also enjoyed listening to 'How to train your dragon' and designing their own dragon and dragon trainer.
4HO World Book Day
14.2.23 - SCIENCE DAY! We had so much fun in 4NW during our science day, learning all about electricity! We sorted appliances, talked about forms of energy and even made our own circuits. We tested whether materials were conductors or insulators and made a giant circuit with all of the conductors!
13.02.23 Love of Reading Day in 4HO
Xin Nian Kua Le (Happy new year)
Today 4RT learnt about Lunar new year. Mrs Taylor shared lots of her phots from her time living in China and even brought in her Chinese dress, chopsticks and other items to share with us. We made Chinese lanterns and had a great time learning about another countries traditions and celebrations.
For our first lesson of our new topic Traders and raiders we learn how to make our own looms and how to weave. This will be an ongoing topic throughout Spring term. We are hoping to make a class blanket at the end.
During our Blue Abyss topic we made felt food chains using our sewing skills.
Year 4 have been practising different songs in our music lessons with Mr B. We have been using samba instruments and have even been singing in different languages. It was lovely to see so many parents at our Christmas concert and we hope you enjoyed our performance!
Oh no! Today when we arrived at school we saw that our beloved chairs had gone on strike! They left a letter to the children explaining why they were so cross with them. We worked really hard to write some persuasive writing to persuade the chairs to come back.
This week we started our Blue Abyss topic by visiting the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. We had a fantastic workshop and learnt all about plastic pollution before we went off to explore and see the different animals.
4NW have loved learning all about the Romans! We have had so much fun this half term and really enjoyed dressing up as strong, brave soldiers.
Wow! We have been so proud of our Times Table Rockstars this half term! You have all been working so hard and it is definitely paying off. Keep it up Rockstars!
4NW have had so much fun exploring our big question of ‘What did he Romans do for us?’ Thank you to everyone who came to our Roman Exhibition, we loved sharing our learning with you.
20.09.22.
Today we had a special Roman workshop from a volunteer at Hinckley Museum. We got to try on Roman costumes, heavy helmets and we got to touch artefacts. We had lots of fun guessing what the artefacts were used for and heard many interesting facts about the Romans living in our local area.
Year 4 2021/22
4NW have been having such a fun time in our lessons with Mr B. We have been practising lots on the glockenspiels and look forward to performing our song!
Burps Bottoms and Bile - Memorable Experience
Today we made a working model of the digestive system. And it was disgusting! We used a jam sandwich and lots of household objects to represent parts of the digestive system as the sandwich travelled through the mouth and oesophagus to the stomach.
Sandwich bag - mouth
Water - saliva
Vinegar - stomach acid
Then Miss Warnes showed us how the intestines work! She put a tin of beans inside a pair of tights (intestines) and squeezed it so we could see all of the bean juice (vitamins, minerals and nutrients) and how they are absorbed into the intestines and then are used by our body. Finally she squeezed out the waste products at the end, it was gross!
Wow! We have had such a fantastic half term learning all about our new connected topic. In Misty Mountain Sierra we have learnt lots of exciting information about the water cycle, and have taken parts in lots of science experiments where we learnt all about the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Well done to our Y4 Cricket Team who competed in the Hinckley and Bosworth festival.
During the morning the children had a go at a number of challenges moving on to play mini matches in the afternoon where they didn’t lose a game.
Following this event, all of our children in Y3&4 are currently enjoying weekly cricket sessions during PE with Leicestershire County Cricket Club!
This week our Y4 Girls Football Team took part in a festival at Sketchley Hill School.
During the festival, as well as playing matches against 2 other schools, the girls also took part in dribbling challenges and penalty shootouts.
The girls did an amazing job and played with confidence and most importantly smiles on their faces.
Well done girls!
This week our Y4/5/6 Quad Kids Athletics Team took part in the Hinckley and Bosworth Schools Games Tournament.
Our team competed in the 50m & 75m sprint, standing long jump, howler throw and the 600m run.
The children where a real credit to our school, giving 100% and supporting their team members all the way. It was brilliant to hear them cheering each other on with lots of big smiles and a real sense of achievement.
Schools across Hinckley and Bosworth will all be taking part in the same event at different venues over the next few weeks. We now await the results
Well done to our Y4/5/6 football teams who both won 3-0 against teams from Sketchley Hill.
All the children played with real energy and confidence with 6 amazing goals.
We would like to thank everybody that came over to support us!
A big shout out to all our girls who helped us get involved in the “#LetGirlsPlay Biggest Ever Football Session” on 9th March!
As well as attending today’s girls after school football club, we had lots of girls representing us last week in a football match to mark the start of the FA campaign and ambition for girls to have the same football opportunities as boys.
Well done girls - keep up the good work !
World Book Day
4RT have enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters today. We have created our own World’s worst children characters after listening to A passage from David Williams book, We have completed book treasure hunts and other fun activities. We’ve had a fantastic day!
4HP had a fantastic World Book Day. We enjoyed sharing who we’d come dressed as, as well as sharing the books our characters were from. We completed lots of fun activities in the afternoon such as book treasure hunts and even designing one of the ‘world’s worst children’, inspired by the David Walliams book. What a great day we had!
Wow! Year 4 have been so busy with their sports and activities. We are very proud of how hard our Year4 team worked in the Dodgeball competition. We have also loved seeing you all on Saturday mornings at the Cross Country competitions at Brookvale! Well done to everyone who took part!
This year's E-Safety Day is on 8/2/22:
All Fun and Games. Exploring respect and relationships online.
E-SAFETY DAY
We spent our E-Safety day looking at games and apps that we love to use and play! We know that we love playing games because we get to socialise with our friends and have fun. We recognised that when we get frustrated at a game it can make us feel angry and cross, and ruins the experience. We came up with lots of different strategies that we can use to stay calm when gaming (including taking deep breaths, going for a walk, taking a break, reading and getting some fresh air). We made posters for us to take home with our 'Top Tips' to put on display at home to remind us what to do when we feel stressed!
If you need any help or advice with E-Safety at home please don't hesitate to get in touch!
SCIENCE DAY - SOUND
We had a super science day on Friday as we learnt all about sound! We explored how sounds can be made by playing instruments in different ways, and how sounds travel through vibrations in the air, water, and even through solid materials. We completed lots of experiments when investigating pitch and learning how sounds change when we get further away from them.
Traders and Raiders knowledge organiser- This is all of the knowledge children will learn during this term on the Anglo- Saxons and Vikings.
Spring homework sheet- Traders and Raiders.
4NW want to say a huge thank you to the lunchtime staff for our fantastic Christmas dinner. We want to wish all our friends and family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!
We loved our Big Sing 2021!
We loved opening our Christmas cards today. 4NW want to say a big thank you to everyone that has sent us a Christmas card!
Year 4 were visited by the Leicestershire Music Hub today for a workshop and demonstration of different instruments. We listened to the musicians perform and had a go at playing the steel drums. We learnt different musical notes and even some of the more complex chords. We had a fantastic time!
4NW have been learning new french greetings and exchanging names. We even made scripts of speech to perform. Fantastique!
We have loved the Children in Need quiz with Joe Wicks!
Children in 4NW have been sharing lots of pictures and videos taken on Remembrance Sunday. Jacob, Austin and Liam did an excellent job in their Remembrance Parade. Well done boys!
4NW tried really hard to convince the chairs to come back, and they did... eventually!
4NW started our Blue Abyss topic today by taking a closer look under the sea! We saw lots of different animals and created some ‘Layers of the Ocean’ watercolour paintings.
4RT Tudor Tuesday.

4RT made an amazing effort to celebrate Crazy Hair Day for Halloween on Friday 30th October. Take a look at our hair below:
Parents evening- 4RT
Hello, Parents evening calls will take place on Monday 2nd November and Wednesday 4th November. If you are unable to answer the phone when I call and receive a missed call from the school, I will call back at an alternative time. If I call and it is an unsuitable time to talk then please arrange another time with me for those dates on the phone and I will do my best to accommodate everyone.
Many thanks for your co-operation
Mrs Taylor.
Year 4 Spellings- Week Beginning 26.10.20
As we're limiting the amount of paper that comes home, we will now post weekly spelling lists below. There will be two spelling lists that vary in difficulty and your child should know which list they usually work on. You can download them and print them off or you can write them on to some paper to help your child practice. Spelling tests happen every Monday.

Year 4 Update 18.09.20
Hello! We have had a very busy start back in Year 4! Thank you for all your support already. We have had fun learning lots of new things about the Romans, including staging a battle or two with the Celts!
Just a few reminders from the Year 4 team:
- PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Please send children to school wearing trainers, suitable PE trousers/shorts, their school polo shirt and jumper on these days.
- New spellings will be handed out every Monday for them to learn at home as well as in school. A spelling test will take place with the previous week's spellings every Monday too.
- The two-weekly homework is all based on I Am Warrior this half term, our Roman topic. Please can children complete their next homework by Friday 25th September. Ideas sheets have been sent home but if these need replacing, please let us know.
- Reading records are being collected in weekly so please record any reading done at home in these. Children are expected to read at least three times a week at home, as well as daily at school, which means their reading books and reading records need to come back to school every day.
- Thank you for sending lunches to school in paper/plastic bags. Please can this continue as the large bags/rucksacks are not suitable for our cloakrooms at present, while we are still trying to keep children's belongings distanced. Your child is welcome to bring a book bag or similar small bag to carry their reading book and reading record to and from school, as this can be left by their desk in the classroom.
Thank you again for all your support getting everybody back to school. Keep checking the website for more updates and messages.
Mrs Swan and Mrs Taylor :)
:) Welcome to Year 4 2020-21! from Mrs Swan and Mrs Taylor :)
Hello Year 4,
These videos show you how to enter the school everyday and what to expect in your classrooms. You will need to enter the school grounds via the Richmond Park gates and follow the one way system to the ball court where your teacher will be waiting. Parents can escort their child to the ball court every morning or if the child would prefer they can walk in alone with the Year 5 and 6 children from this entrance. Year 4 children do need to be collected from the ball court everyday by an adult. Please stick to the Year 4 arrival time of 8.30-8.40 and pick up time of 3.10pm.
See you on Friday
Mrs Taylor and Mrs Swan.
Summer Homework Ideas for Year 4 2020-21
To 4CS and 4RT 2020-21,
We are so looking forward to meeting you and starting the new school year together.
If you are looking for something to do over the summer holidays, why not get a head start on your first topic: I Am Warrior! It is all about the Romans and there are some ideas below for what you could do. If you have your own idea though, that's great!
Looking forward to seeing all your great projects!
Mrs Swan and Mrs Taylor :)
I Am Warrior! Knowledge Organiser
To give you an idea of what will be covered in this topic, here is a knowledge organiser, full of the vocabulary, facts and ideas the children will be need to be aware of over the first half term back at school. Hopefully by the end of the topic, they will be able to recall the facts on this sheet and place the Roman invasion of Britain in a wider historical context. Have a look and see which words and facts you already knew, which you are unsure of and which you have questions about.

Home Learning for Year 4 Children
During this time, we thought it would be helpful to provide you with some ideas for home learning.
Please find below Word documents which have a suggested timetable for activities linked to Maths, Writing, Reading, Connected Learning subjects and P4C.
There are also some 'HOW TO' Power Points / sheets to help you when supporting your children and some website suggestions on the plan. All of the additional resources are referenced on the plan. All of the resources can also be accessed via SharePoint. Details of how to login to this have been sent home with the children. If you are unsure of how to access this, please email the school office for access details.
For Computing activities, please take a look at Mrs Cox's updated webpage containing lots of fun activites. Click Here.
For latest information to Parents/Carers from CEOP, on how to protect your children when Gaming, Click Here.
For P.E. activities, some child-friendly links include 'Joe Wicks Body Coach Children's Sessions', 'NHS 10 minute shake ups', 'Cosmic Kids' Yoga and Mindfulness and 'GoNoodle' videos. Hopefully these will help children to stay active whilst indoors.
For additional P4C activities, please take a look at; www.thephilosophyman.com/brainsqueezers. Each week, there will be different Spot and Stripe videos, a game, a riddle, Sticky Questions, a stimulus story and details of Alien Adventures in Philosophy Zoom sessions. These will be changed every Friday.
David Walliams is releasing a new free audio book each day for you to enjoy :)
https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/
The ideas listed will not necessarily match exactly the content and order of that being taught in school, because we have adapted the activities to suit home learning rather than class based learning.
We hope you find this useful. If you have any questions, or need hard copies of the downloads, please email the office who can forward the email on to the class teachers.
Many thanks,
Mrs Taylor and Mrs Clark.
